General Assistance to Hurricane Victims

National Organization for Victim Assistance Crisis Response Teams

The National Organization for Victim Assistance is already mobilizing crisis response teams from numerous states across the country. Six-hundred crisis responders from Florida (veterans seasoned by numerous hurricanes that have struck Florida in recent years) are already on the ground laying the groundwork necessary to coordinate the many state crisis response teams that will be deployed to affected states in the next couple of weeks. NOVA acknowledges that, “food, shelter and clothing are of immediate importance,” but once those physical needs are met, victims will be in dire need of assistance to address the serious emotional and psychological consequences of the hurricane. NOVA’s response teams are specifically trained to address such needs in wake of such natural disasters.

For more information about NOVA’s crisis response, go to http://www.trynova.org/crisis/katrina/
NOVA has asked those wishing to support their crisis response teams to make a donation directly to NOVA by going to: https://sectrans.trynova.org/donate.

Assistance to Domestic Violence Victims Re-Victimized by Katrina

There are numerous reports that domestic violence programs in the path of the hurricane were forced to evacuate hundreds of victims who were already living in domestic violence shelters. State domestic violence coalitions in the affected states are still formulating detailed response plans including their recommendations concerning how best to aid them in their response to the crisis. Louisiana’s State Domestic Violence Coalition has already posted a list of immediate needs and how to make a donation. State coalitions in Alabama and Mississippi are still developing their assistance requests. We will send followup e-mails as requests from those states become available. However, the National Network to End Domestic Violence has agreed to set up a special general fund they will pass through to coalitions and programs serving the needs of domestic violence victims impacted by Katrina.
See the listings below for details.

National Network to End Domestic Violence

NNEDV has established a fund that earmarks donations specifically for coalitions and programs serving domestic violence victims impacted by hurricane Katrina. They have requested that you make a contribution directly to the regular NNEDV Fund but mark your donation with the designation “Hurricane.” Donations will then be passed through directly to the programs.

You can make a donation to the NNEDV Fund by going to: http://www.nnedv.org/default.asp?Page=30
(Be sure to designate your donation by including the word “Hurricane.”) You can contribute on-line, or send your contribution directly to NNEDV at:

Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (LCADV)

LCADV released the following statement with regard to their response to Katrina and their need for assistance:

LCADV is a network of 20 domestic violence programs/shelters throughout the state. Four of our shelters and two nonresidential programs are completely closed at this time, and two or three may be completely destroyed. Sad to say, domestic violence and child victimization are social problems that do not stop during this natural disaster we are currently experiencing and, with cessation of all direct services in the gulf coast region, the increased need for relocation and basic monetary assistance is essential for these women and children.

LCADV is accepting donations that are specifically earmarked to assist battered survivors and their children who have been directly affected/displaced by the hurricane. The donations will be used to assist battered victims from the following parishes in Louisiana: Orleans, Jefferson, St. Tammany, St. Bernard, and Plaquemines.

The donations will be used for the following purposes:

1. Relocation of domestic violence victims.

2. Purchasing of basic needs, i.e., baby formula, diapers, food, clothing, etc., that could not be met elsewhere.

3. Deposits on houses and electric bills.

4. Car repair, gas, public transportation.

5. Medical/prescription needs.

6. Other basic, life sustaining needs.

All donations go directly to victims of domestic violence affected by this hurricane and will not be used for any administrative or other purposes.

The Louisiana Domestic Violence Hurricane Relief Fund Account is setup with AmSouth Bank which is located in the following states: Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Tennessee. If you live in one of these states you could make a donation at the local AmSouth Bank Branch to the LCADV Domestic Violence Hurricane Relief Fund, Account number: 0020085338. Donations from other states can be made through wire transfer to this account.

If you would like to make a donation using MasterCard or Visa, you may contact the Louisiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence office at 225-752-1296 with your credit card information. Donations may also be electronically deposited into our account by faxing a voided check with the amount of the donation to (225)751-8927. LCADV will setup an electronic deposit and you will receive confirmation of your donation with the tax-deductible receipt.
